Rotorua Discovery tour
See the steaming mudpools and experience our Maori culture.
This tour ticks all the boxes. If you only have one day to see the unique and special part of New Zealand then this tour is a great option. The tour is informative and fun, and our knowledgeable guides will provide a day of exciting discovery as you journey into the heartland of the North Island. We will visit places the big coaches do not go to and tell you the stories and legends of the land.
After meeting you at the Port of Tauranga we begin the tour with a gentle drive along the coast showcasing our stunning white sandy beaches and telling you a little about the region and its history and significance to the Maori people.
Our first stop is a working Kiwi fruit orchard, where you can get amongst the vines, taste the green and gold kiwi fruit and sample the kiwi fruit and juices. We explain the significance of the kiwi fruit to the region and tell you a little about its growing cycle.
After this its back on the road as we wind our way through the rolling countryside past the dense pine forest plantations and the Kaituna River which feeds from Lake Rotorua and flows all the way to the Ocean.
The next stop is the main attraction Te Puia, home of the famous Pohutu Geyser and where you will learn about Maori culture. You will be guided around the reserve observing the geyser, steaming lakes, the boiling mud pools, the replica Maori village, Pikirangi, cooking holes, the kiwi bird house and the waka (canoe). Experience an authentic greeting from a Maori warrior in traditional dress before being called into the Maori cultural performance by the female kuia (female tribal elder). The concert will showcase Maori dance and song and of course, the haka! We will also visit the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute to see wood carving and flax weaving demonstrations.
After out visit to Te Puia we will take you on a Rotorua City Highlights drive. We drive through the Government Gardens, home to the first health spa in New Zealand and, time permitting, you can wander amongst the stunning flower displays and marvel at the beautiful architecture. After this we will drive along the Rotorua lakefront inhabited by lots of birdlife and a favourite recreation spot for locals and tourists before heading back to the Port via steep gorges and lowland forest. Time permitting we make a stop at a family run Manuka Honey factory store where you can see the live bee display and taste the famous New Zealand Manuka Honey. You might even like to try a delicious Manuka Honey Ice cream made from their own honey.
Depending on the departure time of your ship (and not guaranteed), we will try to fit in another couple of highlights - a visit to Kuirau Park with numerous geothermal hot spots amongst the parklands, a visit to view the pristine Blue and Green Lakes, or a stop to view the location of the most recent volcanic eruption of Mt Tarewera.
After a great day out we will guarantee you are back at the port in plenty of time to board your ship, taking with you lots of wonderful memories from your tour with us into New Zealand's heartland!
