After meeting you at the Port of Tauranga we begin with a gentle drive along Pilot Bay and view the major landform of the region, Mount Maunganui. Learn why it is called “The Mount” and hear the Maori legend of the volcano they call Mauao. We then drive along Marine Parade showcasing multi million dollar properties and sandy white beaches. We will tell you a little about the region, its history and rapid growth.
New Zealand is famous for its Manuka Honey and you will have a chance to taste this special honey and learn why it is so special. The Bay of Plenty is famous for its kiwi fruit and Hass avocados and the landscape is dotted with both types of orchards, making a scenic patchwork landscape. We will visit a working kiwi fruit orchard on the tour. Kiwi fruit was actually first cultivated here in New Zealand and we will explain how it was developed and its significance to the region. View the vines, learn a little about the growing cycle and why it is one of the world’s super fruits. You will sample the fruits and juices and “taste the difference” to learn why New Zealand Kiwi fruit are the best in the world.
Hass avocados have been grown commercially in New Zealand for over 30 years and have been New Zealand's largest growing exported fruit over the past decade. The Bay of Plenty offers the perfect growing conditions with its mild climate and rich volcanic soils. We visit a Hass avocado orchard and learn about the nutritional values of this popular and versatile fruit. You will sample the local Avocado oil which has been manufactured for 14 years right here in Tauranga. Learn why this oil is so good for you and loved by foodies around the world.
Heading back to the city we make a stop in downtown Tauranga to see the original Port location and view the revamped harbouside. We will show you some of the historic buildings and you will learn a bit about the history of the city. One of the highlights of the waterfront revamp is the Hairy Maclary and Friends Waterfront Sculpture Project. This is a new installation to celebrate the works of Dame Lynley Dodd, a Tauanga resident, through her renowned Hairy Maclary series of children’s books. There is an opportunity here for a brief walk along the stunning waterfront and some time for a bit of souvenir shopping.
Finally it’s a brief stop for a great photo opportunity of your ship and Mount Maunganui before we head back over the Harbour Bridge. On the final part of the tour you will see the hustle and bustle of the Port of Tauranga it is easy to see why it is the busiest Port in new Zealand.
