Hobbiton AND Rotorua Tour
Book for yourself or your group!

This is a full day tour covering a lot of ground and most of what the Bay of Plenty has to showcase. Two of the most popular attractions in the Bay of Plenty. If you only have one day to visit, then this is the tour to choose!!

Tour outline: (the order may change on the day depending on the ship schedule and available Hobbtiton tour times)

After meeting you at the port we take a scenic drive along the coast before heading over the Tauranga Harbour bridge and then inland and over the Kaimai ranges. We climb around 300 metres providing spectacular panoramic views across the rich fertile farmland of the Waikato. The main industry in this region is dairying but you might also see some high class horse breeding facilities as we make our way towards Middle Earth passing typical New Zealand farms.

On arrival at Shires Rest Cafe you are collected in the Hobbiton people mover and taken to Middle Earth via the 1250 acre sheep farm. Your expert guide will take you on a 2 hour journey through "The Shire" and there are ample photo opportunities to take home - Gandalf's Cutting, Bag End, hobbit holes and the Green Dragon Inn. You will be told the story of how the remote set was discovered and you will even enjoy an ale or ginger beer inside the Green Dragon Inn.

Leaving Middle Earth we travel 1 hour to Rotorua over the Mamaku Range. This forest merges with the Kaimai Range and is the point where the warm forests of the north converge with the cold forests of the south. Beech meets Kauri in what is the largest continuous tract of forest in the upper North island.

On arrival in Rotorua, and after a drive through the stunning Government Gardens and Rotorua Lake front, we head to Whakarewarewa thermal valley. This geothermal area is unique and very special to the Maori people, and our visit to Te Puia will allow you to see the Pohutu geyser and bubbling mud pools up close. See the endangered New Zealand kiwi bird in the new Kiwi House and tour the extensive Maori Arts and Crafts centre where you will see examples of wood, bone and Jade carving, plus the weaving and processing of flax into garments.

Time permitting you may be able to see a traditional Maori Concert on the Marae [a $15 NZ per person extra charge payable on the day will apply].  We do not include this in the standard tour as on many days the timing of the concert at Te Puia and the Hobbiton tour schedules does not allow enough time. Often you can view the first part of the concert which takes place outside of the meeting house without charge.

Leaving Rotorua, we head north and with time permitting (depending on your ship's departure time) we may be able to make a quick stop at Okere Falls or at a kiwi fruit orchard, where you can learn about the kiwi fruit growing cycle and get to taste some of the fruit and juices.

After your big day out we head back to the port in plenty of time for you to board your ship. This is a full day tour and will leave you with some lasting memories and fabulous photos of the heartland of New Zealand.
