A must do for the Lord of the Rings fans! Join us for a magical journey to Middle Earth where you can become part of the wonder that was created called Hobbiton! It is situated on a family run farm about close to the town of Matamata, in Waikato, and is now a Tolkien tourism destination, offering guided tours of the set.
Tour outline: (the order of stops may change on the day depending on timings)
After meeting you at the port we take a scenic drive along the coast before heading over the Tauranga Harbour bridge and then inland and over the Kaimai ranges. We climb around 300 metres providing spectacular panoramic views across the rich fertile farmland of the Waikato. The main industry in this region is dairying but you might also see some high class horse breeding facilities as we make our way towards Middle Earth passing typical New Zealand farms.
On arrival at Shires Rest Cafe you are collected in the Hobbiton people mover and taken to Middle Earth via the 1250 acre sheep farm. Your expert guide will take you on a 2 hour journey through "The Shire" and there are ample photo opportunities to take home - Gandalf's cutting, Bag End, hobbit holes and the Green Dragon Inn. You will be told the story of how the remote set was discovered and you will even enjoy an ale or ginger beed inside the Green Dragon Inn at the end of the tour.
Hobbiton is a living film set - it is maintained by a team of gardeners and maintenance staff. It is the only purpose built film set in the world where the public can go to enjoy and experience it as it is in the movie.
After a break for lunch (time permitting) and shopping at the Shires Rest, we head back over the Kaimai range and make a stop at McLaren Falls, 190 hectares of pastoral and horticultural land set alongside Lake McLaren.
Our final stop is at Mossop's honey. This is a family business that has been producing and packaging honey and products for over 60 years. There is an excellent live bee hive display and informative panels tell the story from beehive to honey pot. There are lovely products to purchase or you might like to try the Manuka honey ice cream!
Finally, we drive through Tauranga city pointing out some of the highlights and historical sights, over the harbour bridge with a stunning view of the Mount before returning you to your ship.
