Auckland - Waitomo Caves - Hobbiton
Extend your New Zealand adventure and take in even more of this amazing country. Join us for two days as we experience some of the real New Zealand, off the beaten track and away from the crowds. We visit four world famous visitor attractions on this tour as we travel through historic country towns and stunning countryside with lots of sheep and green grass! Breathe in some fresh country air and learn a bit more about the uniqueness that is New Zealand.
After collecting you in Auckland, we travel south following the mighty Waikato River through King Country. We head to the cute Kiwiana town of Otorohanga. Here we get up close to see our national emblem, the native Kiwi bird, in a nocturnal house. We will also take a walk through New Zealand’s largest dome aviary, a sanctuary for some of New Zealand’s unique native birds and reptiles like the Tuatara (ancient lizard).
After lunch we head off to the famous Waitomo Glow worm caves. Glow worms are unique to New Zealand and a “must see”. The Maori translation of Waitomo is “Wai” meaning water and “Tomo” meaning a hole in the ground. Marvel at the amazing stalactites, stalagmites and other limestone formations as you are guided through, hearing the history of the caves and legends of the locals. The cave tour finishes with a magical boat ride through the subterranean Glowworm Grotto - lit up by the lights of thousands of tiny glowworms.
We overnight in Hamilton, New Zealand’s fourth largest city. Here you will find lots of great restaurants, bars and clubs showcasing local and imported food and beverages. There is also a modern casino for those who are feeling lucky. The night is your own to do as much or as little as you wish.
Day two begins with a full buffet breakfast before we depart for a guided tour of the award winning Hamilton Gardens. These stunning and unique gardens are not to be missed. Your guide will share the history of the gardens and how they were transformed from a rubbish dump into the stunning gardens before you. This is a conceptual garden that will transport you through time and to far flung corners of the world. Wander through a tropical jungle, visit ancient China or a 16th Century Renaissance garden. This is a delightful way to spend the morning.
Next its off to Middle Earth to search for a Hobbit or two! This is a “must do” for the Tolkien fans! On arrival at Shires Rest Cafe you are collected in the Hobbiton bus and taken to Middle Earth via the 1250 acre sheep farm. Your guide will take you on a 2 hour journey through "The Shire" and there are ample photo opportunities to take home - Gandalf's cutting, Bag End, hobbit holes, the Mill, the Green Dragon Inn. You will be told the story of how the remote set was discovered and you will even be given ale inside the Green Dragon Inn at the end of the tour. Hobbiton is a living film set - a team of gardeners and ground staff maintains it. It is the only purpose built film set in the world where the public can go to enjoy and experience it as it is seen in the movie.
After a busy and entertaining couple of days, its time to say farewell. You will be dropped either at Auckland airport or back to your city accommodation. Lots of memories and photos will be sure to remind you your mini exploration of the wonderful Waikato country district of New Zealand.
